Arsenal currently sit 9th in the Premier with the hopes Champions League gone long before and Europa League also out of reach with Leeds United behind them with 2 points to catch up their 9th place currently under fire. Although the owners have shown faith in Mikel Arteta but nothing seems to work so far.
Well, to put it in very simple terms: they don’t score enough goals. They have scored 49 goals this season scoring an average of 1.40 goals per 90. They have conceded 38 goals conceding 1.09 goals per 90. Their shot accuracy is also to blame. Their shot accuracy currently stands at 33%. They have taken 432 shots this season and only 142 shots on target. Possession is not a problem with Arsenal ranking 5th in passes with 18,589 averaging 531.11 passes per 90.
Finishing is a major issue for Arsenal with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang lacking form with each passing season. Arsenal have hit the woodwork 17 times this season and rank 6th . They have also missed 32 big chances.
Not in the “which position should he play?” kind of way (there are pros and cons of playing him both up-front and left-wing) but in the sense that Aubameyang simply isn’t scoring goals anymore.
The Gabon international has scored consistently since the moment he arrived in England. He bagged 10 in 13 appearances during his first half-season, then 22 in 36 in both his first and second full seasons (sharing the Golden Boot in the former). He only went more than three games without a goal once, and that was the first four games after the Premier League’s hiatus earlier this year. Well, all summer the raging issue for Arsenal, almost more than any new signings, was whether Aubameyang would renew his contract with Arsenal or not. “Pierre sign the ting” became the meme, and who could argue with Arsenal’s desperation? Aubemeyang had been a proven quantity for the Gunners, was their captain and, despite his age, a key part of Mikel Arteta’s plans.
Then, three days after the opening day win against Fulham, Pierre did indeed sign the ting, committing his future to Arsenal. Since then, he has taken 15 shots, hitting the target 6 times and scoring just that lone penalty.
Defence is not a problem this season with them only conceding 38 goals this season normally defence was a problem from past season but this problem is gone this season.
Arsenal need to shake up things a bit with them aimlessly putting crosses across the field and them not working. They have just 1 goal from counter attack and just 46 goals from inside the box and 3 from outside.
Clearly Arteta has got some tactics wrong at Arsenal and they need to reorganise a bit.
SBK percentage odds for Premier League top-four finish:
- Man City: 90.09%
- Liverpool: 89.29%
- Chelsea: 68.97%
- Spurs: 64.52%
- Man Utd: 36.50%
- Arsenal: 11.11%
The problem with Arsenal is that they aren’t a creative side, but this has been the case for a long time, taking superb shots from average chances, or just creating his own shots, and finishing with unerring accuracy. And this lifted and inspired other Arsenal players to do the same.
Midfield is not a problem for Arsenal with new academy prodigy Emile Smith Rowe both creating chances and scoring at the same time and new loan signing Martin Odegaard
looking set of sign permanently. A new striker is definitely needed and Arsenal should be looking to offload players not in their program and selling Aubemeyang can make way for a new striker to come.
